I am too busy writing my dissertation to dazzle all of you with my fantastical procrastinations these days, but sometimes something comes along that needs to be registered. That something is Oaxaca right now.

I was hoping Fox was just posturing with yesterday's announcement since I guess he's done it before, though they say he's been moving federal units around Oaxaca for weeks now. It's such a fucking mess. A friend of ours who was working with indymedia was killed Friday night at one of the barricades, but I can't tell if the decision to move the PFP in happened before or after or in response to the attacks he was reporting. I'm also confused about what the Zapatistas are going to do, because as of last week they allegedly pledged armed support in the event of federal intervention, but the people organizing in the city were kind of ambivalent about that? and now this thing says "urging solidarity".

So you were friends with Brad? I'm really, really sorry about what happened.

They're making it out like the decision to move in the feds was "because of the shootings," but that's completely ridiculous. The shootings became a convenient excuse, but considering that 1)threatening to do it all along, 2)the shootings were done by paramilitary/police and 2)paramilitary/police have been shooting people all along, it's the kind of transparent lie that works precisely because no one is paying attention. It attributes causality in the way it juxtaposes the events, for the benefit of the passive reader of the NYT or BBC.

I don't know what the Zapatistas are planning to do...I'm checking the news...

Fuck fuck fuck. Thank you for posting this link. The passive connection there is all the more disturbing, because the mainstream news sources will justify martial law under almost any circumstances. Ugh.

Here's something:http://www.laluchita.blogspot.com/

("The people of Oaxaca resist. No honest person can remain silent and inactive while such a majority indigenous people is murdered, beaten and thrown in jail."

The EZLN announced that “for the entire day on November 1, 2006, the highways and roads that cross territories where the EZLN are present in the Southeast of Chiapas will be closed."

Also through the Sixth Comission, "the EZLN has initiated contacts and consulations with other political and social organizations, collectives, groups and persons with The Other Campaign to start Days of solidarity with Oaxaca and to announce, together as one coalition, a nationwide strike ("paro nacional") for November 20, 2006.")
